How to Install Channel Letters: Surface Mount vs Raceway Mount

Channel letter signs are widely used for storefront branding. When you place an order, one critical decision is the installation method: surface mount or raceway mount. Each has different wiring, cost and wall requirement.

Surface Mount Channel Letters

Surface mount means each letter is mounted directly onto the building wall. LED wires run behind each letter and go into the wall. Pros: Clean minimalist look, no visible box on wall, good for smooth walls. Cons: Requires wall drilling for hidden wiring; installation takes longer, higher onsite labor cost. Best for: High-end cafes, boutique shops, smooth plaster or brick walls.

Raceway Mount Channel Letters

All letters are pre-wired onto a metal raceway box. The whole raceway is mounted to the wall, power supply hides inside the raceway. Pros: Fast on-site installation, simple wiring, less wall drilling, easy maintenance. Cons: Visible metal box behind letters, slightly less aesthetic. Best for: Retail shops, shopping mall stores, rental properties, contractors.
